Scale Not Moving? 10 Signs You’re Actually Losing Fat
I was looking through my weight records from last year and realized I was 4 jin (about 4.4 lbs) lighter than I am this year. At first I felt pretty anxious, wondering if there was some quick way to drop back down to that same number.
But then I noticed something — when I put on a pair of pants from last year, the waist felt looser. And at the gym, my workout clothes looked more “toned” on me than they did back then.
So I measured my waist, and I was shocked!
Last year, even though I had slimmed down to 112 jin (about 123 lbs), my waist was nearly 80 cm (31.5 inches). This year I’ve gained 4 jin (4.4 lbs), but my waist has shrunk all the way to 74 cm (29 inches). That honestly made me happier than seeing the number on the scale drop!
· If the scale isn’t moving, you might still be losing inches
A lot of people see the scale go down but still look heavy. What’s usually happening at that stage is that you’re losing mostly water and waste. After that, your weight may hit a plateau or even tick up slightly — there’s really no need to panic!
If you just stick with it for another two weeks, your body fat will start coming off too, and your waist, thighs, and other measurements will follow. That’s true, healthy fat loss! Just like what happened with me this year. I’m so glad I measured my waist; otherwise I might have had a mental meltdown and made the whole fat-loss journey even harder.
So, ladies, during a fat-loss phase, besides dropping inches, if you notice the following changes, it means you’re already on your way to getting lean!
01 Your waist is noticeably smaller
This is the most obvious sign: your waistband feels clearly looser, when you sit down there’s no thick roll of belly, and in the morning on an empty stomach your tummy looks flat. It means your visceral fat is decreasing.
Fat takes up more space and weighs less; muscle takes up less space, is denser, and weighs more. That’s why the number on the scale can stay the same while you visually look like you’ve lost a size.
02 Your exercise endurance is improving
Walking doesn’t leave you out of breath anymore — you might even find yourself choosing to walk everywhere. Doing 40 minutes of incline walking on the treadmill feels easy.
This means your body is becoming lighter and your cardiovascular fitness is improving. You stop dreading everyday activities like walking and housework — all that invisible energy expenditure quietly helps turn you into someone with a “naturally lean” body type.
03 Your skin condition is getting better — less oil, fewer breakouts
Fat loss, detoxing, and skin health have always gone hand in hand.
The excess oil in your body doesn’t just make you gain weight; it also shows up on your face: greasiness, breakouts, enlarged pores. When you start losing fat, cut out high-oil and high-sugar foods, and eat clean, it will reflect on your skin: less shine, fewer pimples, and a fresh face even without makeup!
The number on the scale is something only you know, but whether your skin looks good or bad is obvious to everyone at a glance. Isn’t that way more rewarding than just dropping pounds?
04 Your stomach seems to have shrunk
Before, when you ate, you always felt like you couldn’t get full, and after finishing a meal you’d still reach for snacks. But now, you feel satisfied after eating just a little, or a single cup of bubble tea lasts you ages — you might not even finish it.
This means your insulin levels are stabilizing and your blood sugar isn’t spiking and crashing anymore. This “physiological” decrease in appetite signals that your body is less inclined to store fat. Your metabolism is improving.
05 Your sleep is deeper, and you wake up refreshed
When you start keeping regular hours and eating light, your cortisol levels find a healthy balance, and your melatonin production normalizes. You naturally feel sleepy when it’s time for bed, your deep sleep gets longer, and you sleep more soundly.
Leptin, the hormone that promotes fat breakdown, is mainly secreted during deep sleep at night.
06 Your bowel movements become regular, and your body feels light
The gut is your body’s “second brain.” Being regular means your gut flora is balanced and toxins aren’t building up easily. Many people’s “puffy fat” is actually water retention and accumulated waste. Once your gut health is on track, your belly naturally flattens, and your whole silhouette looks thinner.
07 You genuinely enjoy a healthy lifestyle and clean eating
You’ve gotten used to going to bed early and waking up early, and you’re used to eating food with less oil and less salt. Eating clean feels effortless now. Whenever you have free time, you’d rather cook at home than go out for greasy hotpot or barbecue.
You need to understand that the hardest part of losing weight and keeping it off is maintenance. If you’ve reached the point where you truly enjoy a healthy lifestyle and clean eating, it means you definitely won’t bounce back!
True weight loss is a full-body recomposition and the building of healthy habits.
As long as the above changes are happening, even if the number on the scale hasn’t moved, you are already on the path to getting leaner.
